About the Speaker: Dr. McDonough is the director of Microencapsulation and Nanomaterials at SwRI in
San Antonio. Most of his career has been spent in life sciences research to the extent that he has over
18 years of experience managing R&D efforts in pharmaceutical development, including bulk and
dosage-form development and manufacturing. The focus of his current work is on developing novel drug
delivery technology. Recently, he has developed a novel calcium phosphate nanoparticle system for small
drug, iRNA and large protein delivery. He is now leading efforts to confirm that this resorbable
nanoparticle-based platform enhances antigen thermal stability and also provides adjuvant effects. He is also
the current program manager (PI), developing and cGMP manufacturing next generation organophosphate
intoxication antidotes for the US Govt. This involves synthesis, scale-up and formulation of a novel
acetylcholinesterase reactivator (AChE). He is also primarily responsible for the development of new
muscarinic agonists that will be used with the new AChE reactivators that are used by the US military and
first responders. He also oversees multiple SwRI programs (govt. and commercial), in ocular, nasal,
transdermal, oral and intramuscular delivery, as well as wound and bone convalescence.
About the Presentation: Dr McDonough will provide a brief overview of SwRI and its expertise in
pharmaceutical development, micro- and nanoencapsulation. He will then discuss and give an overview of
various therapeutic based chem.- and biodefense projects and internal relevant research projects ongoing at
SwRI. Examples will include and cover synthesis, formulation and integrated device development.
